Vassa in the Night A Novel Sarah Porter Books
I really wanted to love this book. It had a unique and interesting premise going in. Alas, each page I turned was a lesson in tedium. Maybe it was Sarah Porter's writing skills, perhaps a lazy editor, possibly even my feeble brain's attempt at untangling the "cluttered" sentence structure...but, I struggled to finish Vassa.Tags : Amazon.com: Vassa in the Night: A Novel (9780765380548): Sarah Porter: Books,Sarah Porter,Vassa in the Night: A Novel,Tor Teen,0765380544,Fairy Tales & Folklore - Adaptations,Fantasy - General,Baba Yaga (Legendary character),Brooklyn (New York, N.Y.),Brooklyn (New York, N.Y.);Fiction.,Fairy tales,Magic,Magic;Fiction.,Tales - Russia,110604 Tor Teen HC,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fairy Tales & Folklore Adaptations,Fantasy & Magic,Fantasy Dark Fantasy,Horror,Horror Ghost Stories (Young Adult),YOUNG ADULT FICTION,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fairy Tales & Folklore Adaptations,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy Contemporary,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Fantasy General,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Horror,Young Adult FictionFantasy - General,Young Adult FictionHorror, young adult horror; teen horror; scary books for teens; ya horror; young adult fiction; young adult fantasy; urban fantasy; urban fantasy novels; fantasy books for young adults; fantasy books for teens; young adult books fantasy; young adult fantasy books; fantasy young adult; ya books; ya fantasy; young adult literature; fantasy books,Horror Ghost Stories (Young Adult),YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12)
Vassa in the Night A Novel Sarah Porter Books Reviews
Story was well written & I definitely liked the main location, but just couldn't get into the main character; I understand she was sort of disinterested in her life, but that didn't help.
What a truly bizarre book! One of the most peculiar stories I have ever read. I enjoyed it a lot - the writing was really good - a less accomplished writer could not have pulled this off.
Vassa in the Night is dark and magical, like everything I've read by Sarah Porter. She writes beautiful, clear prose and creates an immersive world in a surreal landscape. Vassa has strength and vulnerability. She's nuanced and real, but still an aspirational badass. I tore through Vassa and I recommend it to anyone who loves weird and whimsical premises and beautiful writing. It's appropriate for teenagers but I don't know many teenagers--I've recommended this book to countless adults!
Strange and intriguing set of characters and "laws" but in a good way. The ending tied up the loose ends enough for me to find joy from the darkness. It's definitely not a read for the faint of heart though so I wouldn't recommend to anyone that doesn't enjoy horror. Definitely understand the comparison to Neil gaiman but a bit more grotesque.
Love love love this book!
As a child, one of my favorite fairy tale characters was Baba Yaga. So whenever I see that Baba Yaga is part of a story, I pick up a book. A lot of the times, I hurl the book away from me.
This book, I will hold close. It is interesting and unusual and sensitive to the Russian culture and to the Brooklyn one as well. And it is intelligent. And fun!
A young adult novel lovingly based on the ancient Russian tale "Vassilissa the Beautiful" - but moved to contemporary working class Brooklyn.
Of course there is plenty of gritty (sometimes grim) fantasy and related action. With the help of a magic doll from her late mother, Vassa must withstand the machinations of the evil witch Baba Yaga, who runs a 24 hour convenience store and keeps Brooklyn in near-perpetual night.
This book makes suspenseful reading, but can also be understood as a modern retelling of a classic folk myth.
I enjoy stories based in Russian/Slavic folklore and myth, so I was quite happy with this modern take on the Vasilisa the Beautiful. It was entertaining, amusing, had some real tension, and a fairly original take on the story. I recommend it. I believe it is classed as young adult, but I had no difficulty with the protagonist being a teenage girl. Good writing is good writing.
Vassa in the Night starts off like a fairly straightforward tale of adolescent angst, and then takes some wildly fantastical turns, but Porter's prose is so tight and imaginative, and her empathy for her 16yo protagonist's feelings is so great, that it's easy to roll with her as the plot grows increasingly (and genuinely) surprising. I'm easily put off by things seeming gratuitously grotesque (I close my eyes the minute someone mentions David Cronenberg, for example, and am not even remotely tempted to peek until I'm sure the nasty business is over); there's some tough stuff here, but it all felt earned by the emotion of the story. A very enjoyable read.
