I love Sherrilynn's Dark Hunter Series so I decided to check out her League series. And I love it. I can't wait to read more. I don't usually like the alien sci-fi type books. But Sherrilynn brings them to life and makes you love them or hate them. They are real and full with hopes and fears and dreams. The way she creates these world's make you wish upon a star they were real. I'm so excited to have found more works by Sherrilynn. You should read anything she has written you will not be disappointed.Tags : Born of the Night [Sherrilyn Kenyon] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Sherrilyn Kenyon,Born of the Night,iPublish.com,0759550212,Fiction - Romance,Romance - Fantasy
Born of the Night Sherrilyn Kenyon 9780759550216 Books Reviews
Will be familiar with her angst ridden Romance style. This is the first of the League series, and although it's more Science Fiction than Paranormal (like the Dark Hunter themes), her writing style remains the same. Adult sexual scenes, but YA type angst. Just consider this kind of a Dark Hunter preview. Different world, same types of characters. Nice long length to this book. Great action.
As this is one of her earlier works, it doesn't really compare to the Dark Hunter series. There are inconsistencies, and the world building needs some work. I didn't care much for the Heroine for the bulk of the story. I felt that the Hero was a little too much--DH fans will draw a comparison to Acheron, the head Dark Hunter character. This story is the standard Lady in Distress scenario.
I still enjoyed it, because I enjoy Paranormal and/or Sci-fi themed romances with happy endings. I wish I had discovered this series before reading the Dark Hunter books, because then I wouldn't be aware of how well Ms.Kenyon can deliver. This was still, however, a good read for me.
I will probably continue this series while I await more Dark Hunter books.
This was one of those books that I held off on reading because I didn't think I would be able to get into it. Just like with Twilight... I was wrong. I love romances. Even alien ones, apparently.
This is an older book, and that was another reason I had avoided it. I have found that I don't enjoy older books as much because there is often something that "dates" it (like beepers!!). This is a timeless book. The world that is created within is so completely foreign that you are able to immerse yourself in it. It's magical, and I can't wait to read the rest of the books. I am now a DEFINITE FAN of Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Nykyrian is a government trained assassin. He is ruthless and the best of his kind. Kiara is a world class dancer from an aristocratic family. They both have tragic pasts and the love they find is "out of this world". The secondary characters are really interesting and I'm glad to know that the additional books each feature a different couple (much like the black dagger brotherhood). I am excited about this series.
I read this book on the recommendation of a good friend, I love the Dark Hunter series, but this book reads like a B movie version of that series. It's TOO LONG and repetitive. I grew sick of the number of times Kiara had to be rescued. For someone who was in constant danger, it seemed ridiculous the number of times they went out in public, putting themselves in danger, how many times does someone have to try to kill you for you to get that it's not safe to go out in public? Both Nykirian and Kiara got on my nerves with the way they vacillated about their relationship. I was only able to finish bc of my commitment to completing books once I start them.
I hate to write a negative review but this book was way too long and repetitive, I won't be reading anymore books in the series.
This is a science fiction story that takes place in a dystopian type universe. A coalition of planets are inhabited by all kinds of creatures but only some of them get described. The politics of this world are not clear but the different governments employ a league of assassins who operate within a strange code of conduct. They are allowed to kill the civilians they are contracted to kill but not each other unless it's in self defense and blood was drawn. The league trains its assassins to be killing machins with no feelings. To do it, They take young boys and treat them horrendously.
Nyk is a master assassin with a nightmarish past. The atrocious descriptions of abuse he suffered before he was taken to be trained by the league and after were hard to read. He is a hybrid, part human and part another race, and he is despised by both. He trusts no one and doesn't let anyone get close to him. He kills without mercy but has a soft spot for kids.
Kiara is a princes and a famous dancer. She is the doughter of a general and has a horrible past too. Her mother and she were kidnapped by assassins when Kiara was a little girl and they made her watch as they tortured and killed her mother, then shot her and left her for dead.
Kiara's life is threatened again when a government that wants to put pressure on her father hires assassins to kills her. Her father hires Nyk and his crew to protect her. Nyk is attracted to her but is afraid to let her get close to him and doesn't dare touch her. He was raised thinking he was worthless. He saves her life many times and she tries to get close to him but he pushes her away.
A sad but well written and engaging story.
I have waited to purchase the League series for several years. At first I thought it might be too sci-fi for my taste, but then took a chance and purchased Born of Night. My initial review was a 5 star based on the prior book of Ms. Kenyon I have read, but I came back and changed the review to 1 star because the more I thought about the book, the more I felt it wouldn't be a honest review. The characters were well developed and the situations believable to a point. I cannot for the life of me understand why she would feel the need to be so explicitly graphic in her male child torture scenes. She did the same thing in Archeron (I put it down and away with a feeling of great disappointment). I find it odd that her female rape victims are handled in a sentence or paragraph and the male rape victims relive it over and over in page after page of detail. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to read about any type of rape or torture for that fact. Frankly, I buy a book to be entertained, and these type of situations do not constitute "entertainment" to me.
I love Sherrilynn's Dark Hunter Series so I decided to check out her League series. And I love it. I can't wait to read more. I don't usually like the alien sci-fi type books.
