In this follow-up to the series debut,No Such Thing as a Secret: A Brandy Alexander Mystery (No Such Thing As...A Brandy Alexander Mystery) , Brandy is back in Philadelphia to stay. The good news? Brandy has saved her childhood home from being taken over by strangers by buying it herself. The bad news? She is currently jobless, which makes the whole mortgage thing a little...tricky. To make ends meet Brandy reluctantly takes in a roommate, childhood friend Toodie Ventura. When Toodie is accused of a gruesome crime, Brandy goes into full-on investigator mode - with predictably chaotic results. Throw in an ex-boyfriend's jealous wife, a new "love" that is definitely NOT boyfriend material and a series of blind dates that are nothing short of a disaster, and you have the makings of another fun little mystery.

This series has turned out to be a delightful surprise. I confess that I went into it expecting something of a "Stephanie Plum" clone, but it is much more than that. There are similarities between the two, but Brandy is nothing less than an original character with her very own set of kooky friends and relatives that are almost as appealing as Brandy herself. Brandy's first person narrative is humorous, touching and occasionally even insightful. The story is fast-paced and has both light-hearted and scary moments. Most of all this is just a solid, fun, escapist read. If you've enjoyed the "Plum" books then give this a try. If you're not a "Plum" fan then you may want to try this series anyway, as the author has put her own unique stamp on a somewhat familiar storyline.

Series Brief: Brandy Alexander is a 28 year old Philadelphia native that fled to LA after a bitter break-up. After four years in "exile" as a fluff piece reporter, Brandy returns to Philly. With an "ex" that's never completely out of the picture and a new love interest that takes the meaning of the word "mysterious" to a whole new level, Brandy's life is never dull.

Frequent strong language and one love scene that is not particularly explicit (though not completely closed door either).

No Such Thing As A Good Blind Date A Brandy Alexander Mystery Shelly Fredman 9781425953515 Books Reviews

If you're looking for a character series like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum rom-coms, you might take a look at the Brandy Alexander mysteries. With Evanovich, the mystery is somewhat secondary to the romance and the comedy, but these are a bit more about the mystery. Brandy is pretty enjoyable, and she has the requisite two handsome guys hovering around her, helping her out of jams and providing the romance. I wish she'd spend a little less time chasing leads right into the the lethal parts of town and a bit more time with the comic elements of the story (wacky girlfriends, crabby neighbor), but all in all, Brandy's a fun gal with potential.
This was an enjoyable second installment of the series. Brandy moves back to her hometown and purchased her childhood home from her parents. Nick Santiago is still mysterious, and Bobby is still married to a crazy woman. I feel that wife's character was ridiculous that if the author's main, well goal was everyone to hate her, well she highly succeeded. Her friends are intriguing, including Toodie, who Brandy is trying to help. Sometimes, it just feels that Brandy's character goes through so much that it doesn't seem believable that she's still alive. Also, there were still enough noticeable typos all over this book.
Either way, the content was enough for me to want more.
This series is very funny and the author is extremely talented, however, I will say that after the second book, for me, it was more of the same and I didn't seem to be laughing or smiling internally at any of the main characters antics. From the 3rd book to the fifth I was getting increasingly annoyed by her continued stupidity. It was still funny, but there can only be so much of a good thing. I stopped reading after the fifth book because I felt like I would just be reading what I had read the past 5 books. This was the second in the series so I rated this higher, but I wanted to give you a feel for what's to come if you're like me. If you're not like me and don't get bored of reading the same silly antics the heroine puts herself and others through, you will absolutely love this series!!
After reading the first Brandy Alexander book, I was looking forward to the second book. I had heard of this series a while ago, but I was apprehensive about reading the series as I had heard how similar it was to the Stephanie Plum series- and I really didn't want to read any more Stephanie Plum clones or characters who were really similar to her. While I did find the first book in this series to be similar to the Stephanie Plum series, it didn't bother me too much. But the second in this series proved unfortunately more similar to the Plum novels than the first.

While I did enjoy this book, I also really struggled at times to get through it and sometimes just wanted to stop reading it. I found Brandy to be a lot stupider in this book than in the first one- something which reminded me of Stephanie Plum and I found annoying. The other thing that has been bugging me from the first book in this series and again even more with this one is the character of Nick- he is so similar to Ranger from the Stephanie Plum series its ridiculous- right down to his looks, personality and although he has a different career/job, he is STILL so similar to Ranger in terms of connections, cars, and being respected by everyone. Mind you, this is certainly not the first series that features a male lead which is almost a copycat of Ranger- I have read various other novels which are the same and it irritates me. I must agree with another reviewer on here to say that I don't actually know whether I will continue with this series because its just too similar to the Stephanie Plum series. That being said, Shelly Fredman is a good writer and I if I do decide to read another in the series, I hope they won't be as Stephanie Plum like as this one was.
