While this book was made in the 1980s it's still a great read with little differences focused on how we live today. I got interested after it was ranked one of great best 80s things on channel 4 in England via you tube. They made a mini series out of the book. My interest was peaked when I saw the clips. I looked it up and ordered the book off amazon. I found myself laughing and engrossed. If you like stories of revenge and characters that suddenly crack you will like this book. I highly recommend. The channel 4 special like all movies strayed from the book several times but still an enjoyable movie. And secondly after the success of the mini series they launched the movie in America with Rosanne Barr and Meryl Streep: She Devil.

Life and Loves of a She Devil Fay Weldon 9780340589359 Books Reviews

I'm one of those readers that saw the movie first. Now, I love the movie. It's satisfying, silly, and funny and I will watch it if I see it on tv. The book is in a whole different realm. It is dark, enthralling, and unflinching. Talk about a woman scorned! When Ruth commits to her journey, there is no looking back. I'm glad I bought this book and I'm sure I will read it again.
I was inspired to read this book after I watched the BBC miniseries thirty years ago! I was a teenager, home from school with mono, and I got absolutely sucked into this weekly program for about 5 or 6 weeks. It fascinated me. I grew up without the benefit of and YouTube, and had no idea how to even find it! They never re-ran it here in America! Then the movie came out with Roseanne and Meryl Streep, that was based on the story. That one definitely didn’t do the story justice, although took a “cutesy” spin on this very dark, yet intriguing drama. Then, about 8 years ago, the miniseries popped up on YouTube....so I watched the badly videotaped version again. Sucked me in just the same! Luckily, I also remembered it was a book, so I checked it out of the library and I loved it! Definitely a bit different than the television show, but captivating, nonetheless. When I saw that “Audible” had it available in an audio version, I was thrilled! It was fantastic to listen and get re-acquainted with the characters. On the same day I found out about the audible version, I saw that this book has a SEQUEL that just came out! I’m presently reading it on “kindle”...so far so good! Thank you and audible for the memories!
This book is an absolute satire (as well as criticism) of the modern romance novel. It follows the humorously -- and tragically -- dark path of an emotionally abused housewife as she seeks revenge against a patriarchal world that has spurned her. This book is full of dark and painful surprises. While this book is decades old, its portrayal of gender roles in western society are still relevant.
Fay Weldon's outlook is much like the weather of Scotland. The protagonist is an ugly woman, unloved by parents for this reason, and unloving to her children. She is like a moon revolving around her handsome husband and she spends all her energy on keeping him happy. She cleans, she cooks, she entertains, she runs the house entirely alone and hates every moment of her work. Being tall and generally big, she often breaks, spills, burns, and in general creates havoc in doing the detested work. She reads romance novels. When her husband falls in love with the romance author, a tiny lovely woman living in a lighthouse, her revenge begins. The entire book is the strange and bizarre steps she takes to get revenge on her husband and his lover, the author she so admires. It feel bizarre, frightening in her lack of human emotions, and is reminiscent of the prisoners with whom I worked in a psychiatric prison unit. Unique, this is. It's a sort of almost realistic horror story, compelling, but dark and distressing.
This book definitely had an interesting plot which made it worth the read. The scorned wife, the jerk of a husband, and the lavish other woman. The way the author wrote was also very unique. Not really developing the characters or building an elaborate story, but telling it in a way that was more matter of fact. Looking back it was very similar to how the main character probably would have told it all. I loved that the ‘She Devil’ took charge of her own destiny, but my feminist self was a little annoyed at the extent she throws her family aside and the extreme changes she is willing to go through for revenge. Slightly disturbing.
I think this is a fun read when you are looking for something outside of the box.
She-Devil is one of my favorite movies, who doesn't like a tale of justified revenge? I decided to give this book a chance and I'm really surprised! Our heroine is tall, 6'3", not like Roseanne Barr. She has three moles in her chin, not one like in the movie. The way she meets her nurse friend is completely different than in the movie. Suffice to say, you will be surprised, our She-Devil lives many lives, there's even some light lesbian stuff, s/m, the seduction of a priest, etc. If you're a hardcore Christian, you're not going to like this book, because she turns against God. However, if you're open minded, you will enjoy it. You don't even have to be a feminist to like this book, if you have a sense of right and wrong, you will like it.
What a fun book. I remember seeing the movie several years ago, with Merle Streep as the ethereal romance writer, Roseanne Barr as the spurned wife, and Ed Begley Jr. as the adulterous husband.

When the husband, an accountant, leaves his lumpish wife for the beautiful romance writer, the wife decides to get revenge. Little by little she destroys his job, steals all his money, burns her house down. and proceeds to the next level. She turns her eyes to the writer, dumps her children on her, starts a course of body-enhancing plastic surgery, and enjoys life.

The book is as much fun as the movie, as the She-Devil of the title moves step by step to destroy the happiness of her husband and his lover.
