Winterborne Universe Unbound Book 1 eBook Augusta Blythe

Winterborne is the debut novel from Augusta Blythe and the first in the Universe Unbound series. I absolutely loved this book and couldn't put it down once I started it! I expected it to be told from the standpoint of Mia because of the title, but it was instead narrated by Loie, Mia's best friend.

The two girls were more sisters than friends, having known each other literally since birth. Through loss and tragedy, Loie has become as much a part of the Winterborne family as Mia herself. While both of the girls' characters were likeable, it was Loie I most loved and related to. Forever cast as Mia's faithful and supportive sidekick, she always felt second best to Mia. Mia's character, while likeable, came off as a little arrogant sometimes, a little self-centered and insensitive to Loie. They had spent their entire lives preparing for their shared 17th birthday and the moment that Mia's long awaited powers would finally manifest themselves. Loie's entire world revolved around Mia and helping her and Mia had grown too used to be the center of it all. When Andreas entered the picture, that dynamic only magnified. I truly loved how real the characters felt, even in the midst of a fantasy story. Whether you liked them or were annoyed by them, the characters felt as if they were flesh and blood people, instead of fictional characters on paper.

While most of the real action happened in the second half of the story, the first half set the story and built the mystery and suspense. At first, I thought that it was going to have a bit of the typical YA teen drama of two best friends falling for the same hot guy, and it did, but it certainly didn't end the way I thought it would and THAT was refreshing! But the book is so much more than that. The suspense was built beautifully, with hints dropped throughout the story that led you in all different directions. There was a little bit of everything in this book: suspense, intrigue, love, loss, fantasy, friendship, struggle. There were lots of twists and turns as the story unfolded and secrets were revealed. When it was all brought together in the end, I was not expecting it to turn out the way it did. I love being surprised and I most definately was! I highly recommend picking this book up, and I can't wait for the next book!

Winterborne Universe Unbound Book 1 eBook Augusta Blythe Reviews

I have to say that upon starting Winterborne by Augusta Blythe I was expecting a totally different story than the one that I read. I had expected a superhero story from the point of view of Mia, but what I got was a supernatural fey story from the point of view of Mia's best friend Loie. I actually think that I prefer what I read than what I had preconceived in my mind and that rarely happens.

Loie lives with her uncaring semi verbally abusive grandmother since her parents died when she was younger, the same day that her best friend Mia's father went missing. Loie spends the bulk majority of the time with Mia at her house to the point that she has her own room and Mia's mother treats her as a second child. Loie and Mia are preparing for there seventeenth birthday where Mia will inherit the Winterborne superpower legacy. Loie is a faithful best friend and seems quite happy with her role of human sidekick. Insert Andreas, Mia's new British next door neighbor and the girls' mutual crush things start to go wonky there are leprechaun attacks, an army of toads and a fairy that wants to stop Mia's powers from coming into play. Along with the mystery of the death of Loies parents and the disappearance of Mia's dad and who Andreas really is and what he wants, it leads this story into a twist of an ending with a promise of sequels.

I have had really good luck with indie books lately, I have had a few people that have had a few duds and some grammatical nightmares when it comes to indie or self published books, but I have yet to pick one up that had not entertained me completely. Winterborne is no exception; it is a well developed story that is well written and extremely entertaining. Augusta has blended a nice mix of paranormal mythology with her own mutant like subculture. I think that this is aimed at the young adult market but will completely entertain any adult reader.
This book is officially going on my favorites # do NOT miss !!!!!
Btw Augusta Blythe you are a genius
What an excellent book. It definitely deserves more attention than it's currently getting! My heart broke for loie and stupid Andreas. Can't wait to read the next one.
I found the story fascinating and compelling. I appreciated the foreshadowing and hinting that allows the reader to figure things out ahead of the main character -- I find that fun. The book told a story with enough resolution to be satisfying, while certainly leaving enough undone to lead you to the next one. Nice work!
As a YA Paranormal Romance Fan, I loved this book. It was fast-paced and to the point. I loved the characters as they're all very relatable in a supernatural way. Loie, the main character and the narrator, was my favourite. She called herself the 'sidekick' and with all that she went through, my heart ache for her. She was the perceived 'underdog' and I was really hoping from the very beginning that luck will come her way. I loved the twist and turn and I thought the author was quite clever.

I'd give this book 4.5 stars. It was almost perfect. I omitted half a star as I personally just didn't like how the book ended so abruptly. I kept on flicking the page to see how the book will wrap up but was disappointed that it just....ended. Apart from that, it was still an enjoyable book that I want to keep reading more.

Note to author Please do not end your second book that way. I'd prefer an epilogue that build up an excitement for the next book. Like what I've mentioned above, I personally felt that it was too abrupt.

For others - if you like YAPR, you'll like this book. For only $0.99, it was well worth it.
