The Nightmare A Novel Detective Inspector Joona Linna Lars Kepler Laura A Wideburg Books Reviews
I love, love, love this book. The main protagonist is a Swedish police officer, who knows he is really good at his job. While the book is not a "page turner" per se, it keeps your interest with it's wonderful writing and characterization. If you read "Girl with Dragon Tattoo" or the Camille Lackberg series you will also love this book. The story is about an arms dealer, UN sanctions against shipment of arms to specific countries and how the world actually handles these thing. A woman who has devoted her life to peace is thrown into a journey from Hell. An unrelated death is suddenly a professional hit on unsuspecting individuals. There is also a story of a failed musician and his life. All in all it's a great read.
I had read the earlier book, "The Hypnotist" with the same protagonist and was thrilled to find the second in the series was available on my . I can only say the review in the pages made me want to try these books.
I wasn't a few pages into this first Joona Linna police procedural and I was already thinking this guy is a modern Sherlock Holmes, making crime scene observations just like the famed sleuth. Then I set this thought aside and decided he was more like the beloved Morse of fictional police detective fame. Either way Joona grew on me and I now rank him among the most interesting of international detectives, a Finn operating in Sweden of all places.
This is a terrific novel, superbly written, neatly drawing the reader into a thriller masquerading as a police procedural. In another writers hands this could have just been another in line of hard -to-believe mysteries, but Kepler somehow sets it up to get me turning pages while neglecting to put the book down for other activities. The mystery is relatively easy to ferret-out but Kepler kept my attention - a cover-up for illegal Swedish munitions sales and the 'genius' of a for-hire killer kept the story alive until the closing pages. I look forward to more of Joona and his unique investigative ways.
I found this book to be a quick page turner, despite being just over 500 pages long. I read it within 3 days. I just had to keep going back to find out what was happening. The action comes fast. Every shortish chapter has fascinating, compelling, intriguing things happening. This is a police procedural, so if you're looking for that kind of book, this is it! Joona Linna returns in this sequel to The Hypnotist. Our brilliant and independent investigator is tasked with putting two incidents together - how are the suicide of a government bureaucrat and the drowning death of a young woman related? Told in short bursts of action, the story is fast paced and well told. Joona's reluctant co-investigator, Sega Bauer - described as a beautiful "elf" of a woman - I wasn't sure about how her character was drawn - angry, intelligent but not able to effectively stand up for herself - it didn't quite gel. But the fast action will keep you glued to the book.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the author is actually two people - twice as many ideas, twice as much action, twice as....everything!
This book was better than The Hypnotist for me - not quite so convoluted - around and around it went and almost came back to the beginning which had me scratching my head trying to remember who that particular character was.
The "mystery" surrounding detective Inspector Joona Linna are just a little too mysterious.. I was unaware of anything unusual about him in The Hypnotist and it is only in this second edition that he has problems with severe migraines and the final paragraph in The Nightmare alludes to some other "secret"
I am still deciding whether or not to read the third book - that is usually my litmus test.
The most amazing thing, to me, about this book is that all the ratings are not five stars. That is not to say that everyone must agree with me, but a good thriller is not that hard to identify. This book captured my imagination immediately and held my attention throughout. The characters were imaginative, well drawn and interesting. Joona Kinna, a detective who uses Sherlock Holmes type deductive reasoning and investigative techniques, is investigating two mysterious murders which defy conventional thinking. He determines first they are murders and then they are related murders. From there the story winds through a series of interesting and exciting twists and turns building to an exciting conclusion. As detective mystery thrillers go, this is a real good one.
I read the hypnotist first, a while ago. I liked it enough to try the second in the series, the Nightmare. I have just finished it and feel cheated. The characters never come to live for me. I like eccentric main characters but Joona is not cutting it. Joona seems to be based on characters like Simon Serrailler (Susan Hill). Adamsberg (by Fred Vargas) and maybe some of Pendergast (Preston & Child) but not quite as good or quite as eccentric.
I found some of the described scenes not only completely ridiculous but quite annoying as well. Police and other criminal procedures not well researched. The whole German Embassy part was idiotic and served absolutely no purpose. The chase on the island, where they encounter the most unhelpful people you can imagine. The famous tv host has no purpose except for making the story more unreadable. The girl found drowned with dry clothes and everyone going 'wow, what has happened here could it be murder and how can it be'. Needlessly complicated. Then the bit 'aha' moments throughout the story.
There were moments in the book where I thought that the authors had disagreed and didn't know how to proceed with the story. There were a few pages here and there, where the story picked up, was an almost pleasant read, only to be put down in the next pages.
I did get the third in the series and will read it. Just to be fair and give Lars Kepler another chance.
Highly recommend this new novel by Lars Kepler. Much more fast paced than the Hypnotist and I'm hooked on him now for life.
